POLICIES:

  • No refunds are given unless the coordinator cancels the course.

  • Classes are held based on enrollment. If a class is canceled due to low enrollment your registration fee will be refunded in the manner in which you paid.

Assisting Aging Parents

Are your parents in their golden years? Learning how to help parents or other loved ones through their transition can prepare us for our own. This compassionate and comprehensive class will give you the tools, techniques, and insights for this passage. Growing older is a part of life. Some aspects are joyful, some bittersweet, some frustrating, some frightening. You will learn what to expect, what to watch for, how to deal with physical and emotional challenges, and where to find resources to help. You'll understand the impact of retirement, learn how to choose a nursing home, and be prepared to deal with death. You'll learn about financial and legal considerations, health issues, and family interpersonal relationships. You'll be introduced to special communication skills, observation methods, and coping mechanisms to ease the burden for everyone involved. Discover Digital Photography

Join us and explore the world of digital photography! Discover Digital Photography provides an introduction to the fascinating technology that has catapulted the photographic world into the 21st century. You'll explore a broad overview of the basics of digital photography, equipment, software, the digital darkroom, printing, using photos on the Internet and with e-mail, along with commercial and personal applications. You'll learn how to decide what equipment and software is best for your personal digital photography needs, what you can do with digital photography after you've taken the pictures, and what you can expect to invest. Whether you're new to photography or a long-time photographer looking for a complement to traditional photography, this class will provide an introduction to new opportunities for putting digital photography to use.  This course serves as an excellent introduction before taking Secrets of Better Photography where we focus our time on camera settings, features, and the mechanics of taking better pictures.

Empowering Students With Disabilities

Teaching students with disabilities is a rewarding challenge, and this course gives you the tools you’ll need to succeed.  No matter what grade you teach—from preschool through high school—you’ll learn powerful strategies you can put to work immediately in your classroom. In addition, you’ll gain the knowledge you need to understand and cope with the most common disabilities you’ll encounter.

You’ll start by putting yourself in the shoes of students with special needs as you explore a wide variety of disabilities ranging from autism to cerebral palsy. Handling Medical Emergencies

What would you do if a member of your family suffered a medical emergency? You could certainly call for trained emergency medical responders, but what would you do while you're waiting for them to arrive?

Every second counts during a medical emergency. Recognizing the early signs and symptoms of common medical conditions and providing appropriate treatment can mean a better outcome for the patient. Early recognition and intervention can greatly reduce the seriousness of the illness, which means a shorter hospital stay and lower medical costs. It's also very satisfying to know how to help someone in a time of need.

This course will identify common medical emergencies affecting children and adults, help you recognize signs and symptoms, and teach you how to render appropriate emergency care. For adults, you will learn how to recognize and manage chest pain, heart attack, stroke, diabetic problems, seizures, breathing difficulty, burns, and allergic reactions. Navigating Divorce

Getting through a divorce is a daunting, emotional, and disorienting process. In this course, you'll learn how to move through the divorce process step by step to gain a sense of control and stability, and emerge on the other side as a healthier and happier person.

Photographing People With Your Digital Camera

Ready, Set, Read!

Response to Intervention: Reading Strategies That Work

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could be proactive in helping our struggling readers? Well, we can! In this six-week course, you'll learn response to intervention (RTI) strategies that ensure the struggling readers in your classroom get the help and education they need. Secrets of Better Photography

Secrets of Better Photography is a hands-on course for beginning and emerging photographers, as well as those transitioning from traditional to digital photography.  You'll learn how to take better pictures by understanding how different types of cameras work and getting to know each of the features your camera offers. 

With each lesson you'll have an assignment to put the course work into your hands and throughout the class, you'll have the opportunity to have your images critiqued by your classmates and the teaching team.  We'll cover digital equipment, lighting, compositional tips and tricks, as well as ways to work with people and pets for great portraits!  You'll explore photojournalism, still-life photography, a few digital editing tools, as well as manual settings for dynamic exposure.  With step-by-step explanations and lots of examples, you'll see how to take your camera out of automatic mode with terrific results. You may be surprised at what f/stops. aperture settings, and shutter speed can do for you!  We'll explain terms like depth of field, and frozen action and show you how to use your camera to get shots like the pros. 
 
After six short weeks, you'll see the difference in your photographer's eye, and your photos!

Singapore Math: Number Sense and Computational Strategies
